For a better description, we'll have to wait for the return of our official weather recorder. The Tryon Thermal Belt Chamber of Commerce's "Visitors Guide and Member ship Directory" is back from the printers, and it looks mahve- lous, darling. Registration for the Spring Session takes place today from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at Discovery House of the Arts, 115 Walnut Street in Tryon. Sgt. Diane Masologites, U.S. Army, and Capt. Larry Biggers, U.S. Marine Corps, will be the featured speakers today at Tryon Rotary's "welcome home" luncheon. Both served in the Persian Gulf. Tickets are on sale for the Tryon Little Theater production of "Send Me No Flowers." The show will be on stage May 2-5. N .C . 28782 Thermal Belt BPW Scholarships The Thermal Belt Business and Women's Club will again offer two scholarships this year. The first one will be to a high school senior. Tire applications have been distributed to the high schools: Landrum High School, Polk Central High School and Tryon High School. There are also applications at the Columbus Library, the Lan drum Library and the Lanier Library. This scholarship will be in the amount of $500. The deadline for applications will be May 22, 1991. The second scholarship will be in memory of Hazel Wig gins, the amount to be deter mined by donations. Smith of Columbus has been named vice president of finance of Thoms Rehabili tation Hospital Health Service Corporation in Asheville. Smith, a native of Kentucky and a graduate of the University of Louisville, comes to his new position with eleven years of healthcare finance experience in both non-profit and proprietary settings. For the past 3 1/2 years he was the chief financial offi cer at St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus. Smith will be responsible for all financial operations of the 80-bed rehabilitation hospital and its affilitates. Additionally, he will have administrative responsibility for all aspects of (Continued On Back Page) 16 Pages Today 2oe Per 1 op' Favorable Credit Rating Expected Polk County's school superin tendent, county manager and commission chairman all expect a good credit rating after visit ing two financial rating compa nies in New York last Wednes day and Thursday. Word on Polk's exact credit rating should arrive early this week. Sealed bids will be received May 7 for the sale of the bonds. Supt. James F. Causby, County Manager John Lewis and County Commission Chairman Jeannie Martin traveled to New York to pre sent county audits from the past three years, reports on the cur rent budget year, and other per tinent data on Polk County to officers with Standard and Poors and Moody's, the top two financial rating companies in the nation. Both companies are located in the financial district of Manhat tan. A favorable credit rating for Polk County could result in lower interest rates on the $14 million school bonds, Causby said. Neither bond rating company identified any problems with the county's finances and each only asked for minimum addi tional information, such as the percentage of high school grad uates going on to college, Dr. Causby said.
